Going Overboard
Description
At the beginning of this no-budget cheapie, Adam Sandler tells us this is a "loosely thrown together story" built around free access to a cruise ship and "a lot of good-looking women." So they get an A for truth in advertising. Sandler (very green in his first feature film) plays Shecky Moskowitz, a cruise ship waiter with dreams of being a standup comedian. At one point, General Manuel Noriega sends some goons to take over the ship. And there's a lot of voluptuous women hanging around in bikinis. So much for the plot. Sold as a wacky sex comedy, Going Overboard is more of a funny-nose-and-glasses movie, desperately trying anything for a laugh. Sandler's trademark being-funny-by-being-unfunny hadn't started to click yet. Only Billy Zane (as a sort of long-suffering-Jewish-grandmother-ish King Neptune) and Adam Rifkin (as a self-absorbed, mossy-toothed heavy metal star) seem to have any comic timing. A number of the supporting cast would go on to play roles in other, better Adam Sandler movies. Look fast for Billy Bob Thornton(!), appearing here as "Dave the heckler." --Geof Miller

1 of 5 stars  A definate low point in Adam Sandler's career
Tuesday, April 05, 2005
Back in the late 80's Adam Sandler was on a MTV game show called "Remote Control". He played various quirky roles. You would have thought that some of that talent would have made it to this film.

This film is definately the worse movie that Adam has ever been in. Adam's acting leaves a lot to be desired. This film is a comedy with no laughs.

2 of 5 stars  Blonds prefer cucumbers
Monday, September 20, 2004
This is a no budget flick, not a low budget flick, a no budget flick. Burt Young gets the movie started off correctly, looking through a list of porno movies (one of which is called "Blonds prefer Cucumbers," as he assumes his role as General Noriega. I think Burt Young did a good job in this role.

I also believe Ricky Paull Goldin (The Blob), and Warren Selko were very funny as the two terrorists. I also liked Billy Zane's character, Neptune (I just believe he is an extremely under rated actor). Billy Bob Thornton makes a guest appearance in the crowd giving Sandler a hard time, and there's Allen Covert (Little Nicky, Anger Management, 50 First Dates, Mr. Deeds, Big Daddy, Waterboy, Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore, Air Heads, etc, etc.) again, playing the bartender. How about Adam Sandler talking Milton Berle into this movie, how did that happen?

All right, all right, I think I covered the few bright spots of this movie. In the end, it's one word...bad. Adam Sandler doesn't act in this movie (it's arguable that he did in Billy Madison, but the story and situations made you laugh), he just goofs around on camera, throws out a story he probably made up in his car on the way to the cruise, and someone decided to make it a movie.

The director, Valerie Breiman, directed this movie, Casual Sex, Bikini Squad, Love & Sex, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids the TV Show. I hope that is enough to keep people away from this movie.

Even w/this movie for sale above for $.75, you'll get ripped off on the shipping, don't buy it, don't rent it, don't see it, you will hate this movie!!!!!

Grade: D

1 of 5 stars  One of the worst movies I have ever seen.
Monday, August 23, 2004
I like Sandler.
I couldn't even finish watching it. I purchased it, and actually took it out of the DVD player and broke it in half.
The general public should be able to sue the actors and distributors when stuff like this is foisted upon us.
Truly horrible, not funny, taped together. They must have spent fifteen bucks filming this abortion.

2 of 5 stars  Not what you'd expect from Adam Sandler AT ALL
Monday, July 12, 2004
I bought this movie thinking it would be funny considering Adam Sandler stars in it but it was a very low budget movie with HORRIBLE female acting and no nudity at all. I wouldnt say its the worst movie cuz it has its moments. I couldnt believe Adam hardley said one funny thing, alot of things he said I think were supposed to be funny but werent and whenever he tells a joke its a piece of s**t like "why did the chicken cross the road?". So I really wouldnt recomend this to anyone.

1 of 5 stars  Zero stars for this farce
Wednesday, May 19, 2004
Adam Sandler has made some relatively funny movies in his time. This one is most assuredly not one of them. I realize that this film was one of his earliest projects - long before he hit his stride & could dictate what films he wished to contribute to. In the case of this movie, that point is exceedingly obvious.

It seems like this DVD tries to be funny by being unfunny. That's kind of like trying to satisfy your appetite by starving yourself. Nothing in this film is funny - period. It almost appears that it is deliberately that way (kind of ironic for a comedy, wouldn't you say?).

The only redeeming quality of this movie is that it does have some fairly attractive women wearing bikinis. If it were not for that, I would give this one negative one stars instead of zero stars.

There are some other Sandler movies that are of fairly high quality. Do not make the mistake of believing this is one of them. In fact, if you happen to see this DVD in your shopping cart, be sure & throw it overboard!
