i am a little surprised by this book because i am having a hard time getting through it because i am so bored with it. i agree with a lot of the comments in the previous reviews, so i won't repeat them. also.. why did they make the book larger.. for me that was part of the charm of her books was that smaller size. i loved it. i hope she goes back to writing books about earlier topics in her series. if she had started out with the latest books i probably would NOT buy her books. but because the first ones were so good...story wise and how they were written.. i kept following her work. i'm not sure i will buy falcon dance.. maybe.. depends if i get through this one. also.. for anyone who enjoys her writing topics.. try a series called SWEEP ... i liked those you might too.

BORINGSunday, April 17, 2005
Ok, I read the prequel to this book which although was not fine literature or a book I'd ever really remember,I still enjoyed it. I only managed 20 pages of this book so far and I'm bored stiff! It is INCREDIBLY predictible. Ok there are bad people threatening the lives of the king and queen, hmm.. who could the mysterious person be..? I don't care! I can't even manage to read the 150 other pages to find out. I never really liked the whole vampire style this author has in the first place and this book just helped finalize the fact that I'll never read another one of her books.
This book is boring and it you didn't read the prequel than I'm sure this book will be especially tedious.
I would not recommend it to anyone.

A transitional piece?Friday, April 08, 2005
As big a fan of Amelia Atwater Rhode's books I am, I can't say that Snakecharm was a masterpiece. Perhaps I had too high expectations, but...It's main flaw, I suppose, was boring the reader. Zane completely lacks the vibrance that he had in Hawksong, and Danica seems to have become a very... normal character. Also, I feel a little cheated the way Rei and Kel were slapped together at the end. I mean it's like, "Hey, these two are unattached and we need a lady for Rei, so who should we get? Why, Erica/ Kel, of course!"
Also, the falcons are too strong, thus making Zane, previously portrayed as a powerful character, appear entirely helpless. I've always been in love with the falling-in-love part, so the story between Danica and Zane had lost some of the hypnotic spellbinding quality since the two of them are like any lovey-dovey regular couple.
However, I do believe that Snakecharm has left many good questions to be answered in the following books, like the White City of the falcons, the mystery of exactly what happened between Alasdair and Kiesha, as well as and the dangerous secret that Kel learnt of. One can only hope that Falcondance will be able to pick up where Snakecharm left off with more a engrossing plot line filled with interesting characters.

A disappointmentFriday, February 18, 2005
This is one of Atwater's worst books yet, the plot bounces aimlessly in every direction, without a clear goal. Zane, the serpiente who is marrying his counterpart Danica, spends most of his time whining like an eleven year old child, his character lost all of his charm from the previous book, and spiraled downwards. Danica's character, who was once well rounded, became static as she feel into the weak damsel in distress role, which was the complete opposite in the previous book. The theme of the story is alright, but the characters lost every ounce of personality that made them so addicting.... after reading this book i would strong reconsider purchasing another of her books.

Fans bewareFriday, January 21, 2005
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes latest book leaves much to be desired. After reading more than half of this book I was ready to banish it to the dark recesses of my bookshelf, never to be opened again. Forcing myself to finish it I was left with a feeling of acute disappointment. While the plot did pick up in the last 30 pages or so, the whole book was devoid of Atwater-Rhodes' usual wit and style. Firstly, the characters were flat and lifeless. Anyone looking for an Aubrey or Jaguar hero this is not the book for you. Even Zane, who was such a tantalizing character in the first book, is reduced to a simple narrator. Danica becomes a wishy washy mother-to-be with only one or two scenes where she stands up for her people and acts like a queen. Secondly, romance is well and truly dead. Atwater-Rhodes' fiery couples have entertained us for years, yet Snakecharm follows more closely to her first novel "In the forests of the night." Over all, this book was a limp, disappointing shadow of her other great novels. The only reason I give it 3 stars is out of loyalty to the author whom I adore. I hope her next book will be more in keeping with her ability to weave gripping tales with deep characters. Hopefully this will be an isolated incident and fans will never again be forced to waste our time on a book of this low caliber.
