Product Description
Tigerlily
Description
Though the minor hits "Wonder" and "Jealousy" bore a reasonable resemblance to Merchant's work with 10,000 Maniacs, most of Tigerlily clearly established her as a solo artist apart from her former band. The record's first single, "Carnival," drove that point home, with a hook based more on rhythm than melody and the haunting voice of Katell Keineg adding an intriguing dimension to the chorus. Elsewhere, much of Tigerlily is remarkably solemn and subtle, from the low-key opener "San Andreas Fault" to the widower's lament "My Beloved Wife" to the eight-minute opus "I May Know the Word." Also of note is "River," an emotional ode to friend and fallen star River Phoenix. --Peter Blackstock

This was Natalie's departure from 10000 maniacs, and her approach to mainstream music, without losing her identity and originality, TIGERLILY, exceed all expectations in sales and creativity, and is one of those perfect mellow albums.

5 of 5 stars  A Whirlpool of Emotions
Friday, March 25, 2005
This Album has me in tears, bobbing my head, and chuckling to myself at her sinister comments. Its all wrapped into a beautiful array of beats and melodies, piano, bongos, fantastic guitar and, of course, lets never forget Natalie's unforced and dementioned vocals. She does not need to try, she simply sings, and thats why these songs flow so well. She carries her band, and the band carries her - they do not break rythem, they do not break the flow - and its simply magnificent. I've liked Natalie Merchant for as long as I can remember, I was maybe 9-10 years old when I heard her sweet melody. I wish we had more real, naturally beautiful, and obviously beyond intelligent singers now a days, as Natalie carries her self with such grace and poise. Unfortunatly, for some odd reason, sex appeal and selling out is mainly what main stream media is all about, and it was clear that Natalie stayed true to her theme. Within Tigerlily, there is an emotion that is almost unexplainable. Its soothing, its disturbing - its uplifting and its depressing. Its sort of an elixer of what you might not expect out of an album. But I'm telling you, its pure magic. If you've heard 10,000 Maniacs and you liked what you heard, Natalie's solo albums, specifically Tigerlily, will blow your mind and soften your heart. And I read in another review that the lead guitar is a woman. Wow. That is so increadable. I wish I could play guitar. My twin brother does and has for years and I have know a few female players but she is just amazing. I'll remember now NOT the picture a man when she goes into that unbelievable solo in "Carnival".

It's true that this is a CD to listen to when you're feeling introspective. It's become a sweet part of my life.

5 of 5 stars  Still a strong record worth having
Saturday, January 01, 2005
I have owned this CD for almost ten years now and still get astounded when listening to it every once in a while. The 90's were a cynical decade, full of exciting and unexpected things and this CD is indeed something else. While listening to it you'll find the cynicism expressed in song like "San Andreas Fault", "Wonder" and "Cowboy Romance", but also deep loss - "Beloved Wife", "The Letter", regret -"Jealousy", "Seven Years"-and soothing places "Where I go". The lyrics still pack a lot of punch, the arrangements are beautiful and understated and the voice of Natalie Merchant lures you and guides you through the whole affair without you even noticing. This is still my favorite Natalie Merchant CD.

4 of 5 stars  Who Would Have Thought?
Tuesday, December 28, 2004
I've certainly heard 10,000 Maniacs, but Natalie Merchant's solo work is significantly better. Her lyrics reach deeper while creating people and places that you can feel. "My Beloved Wife" is perhaps the saddest song I've ever heard and she handles it beautifully with strong lyrics and simple accompaniment. "River" takes an angry look at the death of River Phoenix. I continue to enjoy this album in different ways the more that I listen to it.
