One of 'my favourite Bob's' !!Thursday, February 10, 2005
This is defiintely one of my favourite Bob Hope movies of all time.
It has everything from mystery, murders, thrills, chills and that ever present quick banter and one liners from Bob that keeps everything rolling along and in proper perspective.
He was more than ably supported by his co star Paullette Goodard a wonderful actress with a fine camera presence. Also marvellous Willie Best as Bob's "man"is there too to add beautifully to every scene he's in.I never tried of Willies' work over the years and the great supporting work he did in them.
The only fault I can find here is in the film itself. There is more than one area that shows marked deterioration and I thought it could have been cleaned up much better than it was in its' transfer to DVD.
In concluding, besides the noted technical flaws, this is a wonderful movie with high production values and special effects and a great cast. Its also worth mentioning that this disc contains alot of bonus material on Bob and his work for the troops during WW2.
A delight to own and watch.
One of Hope's best filmsMonday, January 17, 2005
Bob Hope is radio personality Lawrence Lawrence ("my parents had no imagination"). He accidentaly becomes a murder suspect, and finds himself tangled in the affairs of beautiful heiress Mary Carter (Paulette Goddard) who has inherited a haunted island near Cuba. smuggled aboard ship in Mary's trunk, he finds himself heading for the island and danger, together with his faithful but bemused valet Alex (Willie Best).
This film is very funny but also has some genuinely scary moments. Bob Hope has his usual supply of witty one-liners, but his character in this film has rather more backbone than the type he usually plays. Willie Best as Alex is very funny too, his role is more substantial than is usual for films of the period, he and Hope are almost more like partners than master and servant. Tremendous fun.

Ghost BreakersWednesday, October 27, 2004
Paulette Goddard inherits a haunted castle in Cuba and radio columnist Bob Hope suddenly needs to get of town quick. Mix in a steamer trunk with air holes and you're already halfway through act one of THE GHOST BREAKERS.
THE GHOST BREAKERS looks good, and benefits greatly from the chemistry between Goddard and Hope, but isn't nearly as funny as it could have been. The thrills come from the underwritten Cuba diplomat character played by Paul Lukas, who apparently doesn't want Goddard to enter into her inheritance and will do anything necessary to prevent it. The chills come when we finally arrive at the castle, an hour into this hour and twenty minute movie, and finally get to see our heroes chased by zombies and ghosts. Before we get to the castle, most of the laughs come from Bob Hope, who must have had his gag writers doctoring the script - his lines have a lot more zing than the others.
Fans of Bob Hope and his type of comedy should enjoy this one quite a bit. The rest of us will at least find it pleasantly diverting.
Extras - There's a short documentary - "Bob Hope and the USO", and a couple from-the-vaults shorties. "Strictly GI - Command Performance" is a filmed episode of a Hope hosted "Command Performance" radio program; a WWII program that took any and all GI requests (i.e.: I want to hear Lana Turner fry a porterhouse steak) and made it happen. "Hollywood Victory Caravan" is a war bond short featuring Hope and Barbara Stanwyck and a great Andrews Sister-ish song & dance routine featuring Betty Hutton and a pair of unidentified cuties.

I can say no more than has already been said by the other reviewers on this page. However, I'm an old Bob Hope fan from way back, and I wanted to interest my family in purchasing this film. To my surprise, my family said they found it too slow moving. So used to fast-paced action films, they could not appreciate the "build up" to the climax, nor Hope's hopelessly funny and glib lines. But to my even greater amazement, when one night we were left all alone at home, my 10-year old pulled this beauty out of our collection and we both enjoyed it together! Bob Hope will never be out of style.

Let the Buyer BewareFriday, August 06, 2004
There's no doubt that The Ghost Breakers is a great movie. But it's unfortunate that this seems to be the only version available on DVD.
At least one scene is missing, that in which the "real ghost" appears. This event is alluded to in the final scene. Another scene is only half there: Paulette Goddard appears onshore, but the sequence wherein she swims to the island has been cut. It seems too that earlier scenes have suffered smaller cuts.
Universal owns this property, and the DVD is issued under its brand name. But the mastering was outsourced, and had I been told the name of the company responsible, I could have done a bit of research and found that its products vary greatly in quality.
Point being: if you want The Ghost Breakers on DVD, this is what you buy. Just don't be too disappointed.
