5 of 5 stars  Meat No Filler

Disgusting to listen to these 21 songs, and to believe that they are not in The Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame..... Well they didn't write most of their songs. HELLO neither did Elvis. This is the 1 CD collection to get with all the gems. However, if this isn't enough, I'd buy the 2 CD Celebrate set. They had quite a few songs that were really good that never came out on a 45. I don't believe you can find it on CD, but the single that went nowhere in the early 80's - It's A Jungle Out There, is a cool song worth finding (the EP was a bad idea as Jungle Out There was the only good tune)

I recommend this CD to anyone who collects hard-to-find singles. This compilation has "'Til the World Ends" and "Sure as I'm Sittin' Here" along with mono mixes for AM radio back in the 70's. Complete, authentic and worth every cent.

5 of 5 stars  Excellent Compilation

This CD is phenomenal! I can't say that enough! From a youth's perspective, these guys are much better than the "pop" bands of today. Pick up this CD and listen to every song: you will find yourself saying, "I didn't know they sang that!" As a whole, instrumentally and especially vocally, they were truly masters of their domain, and they still are today. A big argument that becomes apparent as I read the reviews of this CD is the battle between mono and stereo, especially the "which one is superior" argument. Evidently, these people are seriously into the dynamics of sound. For me, a laymen on sound delivery, they both sound great. Side-by-side, I personally think that the mono versions of the songs they chose to be on this CD sound clearer. But, if you're and everyday person who just wants to buy for the sake of song, its all the same. And this CD is TRULY their greatest-hits anthology, rounding up with the last (and great) single not previously on "Best of" CDs: 'Til The World Ends. So, don't let the "mono/stereo" argument wreck your chances of owning this phenomenal compilation, because the argument, for everyday, music-loving people, is trivial. And besides, if you are a TRUE fan of the band, you would respect their decision to release each song on this CD in the way they are presented anyway. The band obviously wants you to hear their music the way they intended it to be heard. After all, they sang the songs.

5 of 5 stars  The Show Doth Go On

No, they didn't write any of their songs, but man - - they sure knew how to pick 'em. They even covered Elton John's 'Lady Samantha' (SUITABLE FOR FRAMING) practically before anyone even knew who he was. And they usually managed to improve on the originals, beefing them up with hefty instrumentation (Mike Allsup was always an underrated guitarist, and Floyd Sneeds's drumming was powerful and understated at the same time, every time) and their incredible, soulful harmonies. Anyway, this is probably all the Dog you'll ever need, but remember it's a greatest-hits package and doesn't include some of their really great album tracks (Randy Newman's 'Cowboy' on IT AIN'T EASY; Newman's 'It Ain't Easy' on. . .you get the picture). These are the single versions of the songs, and some differ from the LP tracks - - but a lot of you have probably never heard the LP versions anyway so it'll be no big deal. These guys sure were qualitatively consistent from beginning to end. And I sure would like to know what Laura Nyro thought of their version of 'Eli's Comin'.

5 of 5 stars  The SINGLE versions are the best!

Three Dog Night did one very smart thing back in their time...they went back in and reworked several of their songs for the radio...sometimes strikingly different versions of the tunes from their album counterparts...but the results were always very radio-friendly, punched-up versions that took what were all great songs to begin with and catapulted them to a whole new level...the added guitar break in Joy to the World, the tighter and shorter version of Liar, the extra vocal bridge near the end of Old Fashioned Love Song, even the few seconds of added piano at the end of Eli's Coming...al very noticeable touches that made these songs just explode out of the radio back in their day. The fact that they all STILL sound fresh today speaks volumes and shows that this was not only a very excellent live band (the harmonies are STILL razor sharp, if you don't believe me, go see them when they come to your area) but a very smart band (and production team) that knew what would make these songs hits, and there's absolutely not a thing in the world wrong with that...they picked great songs from great writers and did great arrangements of them all (kind of sounds to me like someone else's master plan back in 1966 when that group got their own TV series, and their stable of writers was no B-list either). If you have the 14-track Best of Three Dog Night with the album versions of all the hits, then you need to hear this collection, compare and contrast. I guarantee you this one will be the collection that sticks in your ears!
