Criminal Minded
Description
BDP's first album--and the only one to include the late DJ Scott La Rock--sounded harder than hell when it came out in 1987. Though the simple beat-box patterns on a few tracks sound dated, most of La Rock's tracks are bluntly effective, especially the AC/DC riff he appropriates on "Dope Beat." And KRS-One still performs most of his Criminal Minded rhymes, because his audience knows them word for word: the ultraviolent dancehall of "9mm Goes Bang," the battle cry of "South Bronx" (and its counterpart, the anti-Juice Crew screed of "The Bridge Is Over," with its little Billy Joel homage), the catalog of La Rock's condom collection on "Super-Hoe." KRS bloomed later; here, he just rocked. --Douglas Wolk

"many people tell me the style is terrific/ it is kinda' different, so let's get specific"!!... criminal minded is the blue print of bronx rap! one of the most classic albums ever made. "south bronx" is the anthem of all bronxites, 'till this day. "9mm goes bang"! takes you through the grimy and treacherous crack spots, lyrically! "the p is free" tells you about crack head hoes! every track is a hip hop classic! this cd has the bonus track "scott la rock mega mix" not found on the "land speed" edit. if you don't have this cd, you are not worthy of calling yourself a hip hopper!

5 of 5 stars  Remix for P is Free

This album is considered a hip-hop classic, even to this day. KRS-ONE has his own unique style of putting hardcore in hip-hop, and this album certainly proves it. From track-1 to 11, this album is influential all the way.

5 of 5 stars  The foundation of Hardcore Hip-Hop
Sunday, February 20, 2005
Criminal Minded was one of the first rap albums to utilize rock & roll and pop samples and elements; "Dope Beat" uses an AC/DC guitar riff, the a cappella opening of the title cut paraphrases the Beatles' "Hey Jude," and the bridge portion of "The Bridge Is Over" embodies Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock n' Roll to Me." Criminal Minded is a classic hip-hop album, a manifesto that outlines the essence of the art form.
