The Hollywood Book of Love : From True Romance and Blushing Brides to Tawdry Trysts and Femme Fatales
Book Description

An authoritative and humorous look at Hollywood's ever-changing take on love, romance, and marriage over the decades

From steamy silent classics like A Fool There Was to romantic musicals like Grease to epic schmaltz-fests like Titanic, Hollywood historian and bestselling author James Robert Parish provides a very personal (but quite factual) run-down on how the Hollywood dream factory has portrayed love, marriage, and divorce on the big screen. The Hollywood Book of Love reveals in an entertaining fashion how the attitudes and standards the audience absorbs from the movies influence their expectations in real-life relationships.

Writing with his trademark dry wit and rich knowledge of American movie history, Parish provides perceptive and amusing takes on 200 feature films and offers tantalizing sidebar factoids on everybody from Liz, Bette, and Bogie, to Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Nicole Kidman.

5 of 5 stars  Writer knows Hollywood Love
Monday, July 28, 2003
This book shows a wonderful depiction of all types of love in movies from all eras. It is an easy and fun read all the way through showing the loves and heartaches through the years in some of Hollywoods greatest stories.

A must have for any true romantic... whether it's the irony of love you enjoy or just want to remember the key love stories of old.

5 of 5 stars  Enjoyable, compulsive read!
Saturday, July 26, 2003
Parish has written dozens of books on American film, and his knowledge is vast. This book makes shrewd use of that knowledge, but lightens it with delightful flights of humor. This makes for a enjoyable, compulsive read. The background is there, but it's not delivered in a stuffy or academic way. For example, in his section on Love Story, Parish writes: "As you sniffle through this feature, bear in mind that these characters give shallowness new meaning. For example, our clean-cut hero asks over the soundtrack mourningfully, 'What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?' His brilliant reply includes that she was beautiful (certainly a matter of personal taste) and that 'she loved Mozart and Bach...and the Beatles.' That's the best he can come up with? Oh, brother!"

5 of 5 stars  Hot Love
Saturday, July 19, 2003
I always look forward to James Robert Parish's books for their research and insight, but this one really surprised me: it's a fast, fun read, perfect for a day at the beach--or anywhere!

I knew about most of the Hollywood romances described, but some of the details were fascinating. I loved the sidebar stats and notes (my eyes kept going to them first after awhile!).

The book is also handsomely set and illustrated. This is a must read, and not just for Hollywood movie lovers.

The only flaw I can think of is I wanted more when it was all over!!!

Great job!

5 of 5 stars  Love and Romance
Thursday, July 17, 2003
Long live Love and Romance! Mr. Parish's book, The Hollywood Book of Love, is certainly a gift for any film buff or movie-goer who has found that love and romance on the silver screen can warm and touch our hearts. He has captured the spirit of the films; his format is imaginative and most creative. Please let there be a Hollywood Book of Love #2.

4 of 5 stars  insightful and well-researched
Tuesday, July 08, 2003
James Robert Parish continues providing informative and entertaining accounts of different facets of Hollywood history. Peppered with off-screen anecdotes and details, he invites us to explore the differences between reel and real romance. And he succeeds admirably, because the book is fun to read and leads one to watch the films we're unfamiliar with. Highly recommended.
