Product Description
Avenue Q (2003 Original Broadway Cast)
Description
Avenue Q will only fuel the frustration of those who think that Broadway has given up on sophisticated entertainment geared to adults. "Whatever happened to Cole Porter's witty rhymes and mature subject matter?" they'll say. Well, it's hard to deny that Avenue Q's main frame of reference is Sesame Street and that its humor can be very broad--yes, there's profanity and puppet sex. But the show also displays heart ("The More You Ruv Someone" typically begins with "Why can't people get along?") and a pretty satisfying zany streak. Musically, the score is rooted in 1970s pop, with nods to the aforementioned Sesame Street. The excellent cast, dominated by John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, does it justice, milking the humorous numbers for all they're worth and finding pathos in the more straightforward ones. Not bad for a childish show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 of 5 stars  Eh...good for a chuckle...
Saturday, April 23, 2005
I bought it because it won at the Tony Awards. I figured it had to be wonderful. And it's alright. Definitely very juvenile humor. Which isn't a slam. I chuckled. It was probably worth the purchase just for the song "What do you do with a BA in English." If that's not the actual title, it's close enough. As an English major who struggled to "find myself" after college, I appreciated the sentiment.

I can't say it blew me away. I think I enjoy a more serious and adult musical. Even that comes out wrong because this one is very much "adult." This is the only CD in my entire collection that I will hide from my young nieces. Heh. Maybe I should say I enjoy a more serious and dramatic musical.

This one will give you a chuckle if you don't mind the irreverent and often off-color humor. In the right mood, I enjoy it.

4 of 5 stars  Hilarious! Puppets swearing and having sex...of course

This cd is hilarious. It contains all the songs from the Tony-winning musical. Some highlights include "It Sucks To Be Me," "Mix Tape," "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" and "My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada." Funny, funny stuff. For the most part immature humor, but high on social commentary!

1 of 5 stars  This makes me sick

Watching the 2004 Tony Awards, I have to say I was whole-heartedly rooting for "Wicked" to win best musical...and still think that it completely deserved it. But seeing that Avenue Q won, I thought it must have been completely amazing to win over Wicked. And after listening to the recording, I was perfectly appaled at the shallowness, profanity, and degrading nature of Avenue Q. I am a firm believer in the power of theatre, but Avenue Q really upset me. It doesn't tug at any heart strings, it doesn't inspire any emotions, and really isn't humorous unless you enjoy things like puppet sex, porn, homosexuality, and all those wonderful things. I would've given it zero stars, but it wouldn't let me.

4 of 5 stars  A musical with some guts

Tony-winning Best Musical "Avenue Q" deserves a lot of credit for taking some risks. In their send-up of Sesame Street, Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx have created a score that, while somewhat sweet and old-fashioned, is refreshingly adult and filled with intelligent and potentially offensive humor. With songs like "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "The Internet is for Porn," this is obviously not a musical for little kids, despite a whole bunch of puppet characters.

In a time where so many musicals seem geared towards general audiences, it's nice to find one that has a bit of an edge. Hopefully shows like this and the West End's Olivier Award-winning "Jerry Springer-the Opera" signal a trend towards pushing the boundaries of musical theater. In a way, I wish that "Avenue Q" went even further-- despite the profanity and adult humor, it's awfully good-natured at its core. That's not really a problem, and suits the material just fine, but check out "Jerry Springer" for a musical that's even more jaw-droppingly audacious.

As it is, this recording of "Avenue Q" is very entertaining. The songs are catchy and frequently hilarious, and expertly delivered by a talented cast. Tony nominees John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo skillfully handle multiple puppet characters, and they're well-supported by Ann Harada, Rick Lyon, Jordan Gelber, and Natalie Venetia Belcon, who all get their chance to shine. The only quibble I have with the recording is that I haven't found myself listening to it overly-frequently. I recognize the quality on display, but to be honest, those puppet voices can get on your nerves after awhile... Still, it's great that Lopez and Marx, along with book-writer Jeff Whitty, have dared to create something fresh and original-- we need more musicals like this.

5 of 5 stars  Avenue Q

What a fabulous soundtrack! It is so refreshing to listen to something that isn't full of corny ballads and love songs. Not that Avenue Q doesn't have those, but they just fit perfectly. Sesame Street for the grown up scene. It's wonderful. Such a talented cast and design crew! I fully reccomend this to any Broadway lover!
