The Pinnacle of Gospel and BluesFriday, December 10, 2004
Best blues recording I've heard in a long time. If you love the blues and have faith in God, you need to hear this CD. You won't loan it out because you wont' want to stop listening. She hits you in your gut.

Her Voice is tight:Hit&Miss ProductionMonday, November 29, 2004
Mavis Staples ain't lost a thing Musically in fact she is still bringing it with Her Woodsy vocal presentation that still has so much soul&feeling.but the Production is Hit&Miss to me&she hasn't anyone truly bring the Depth out of Her fully since Curtis Mayfield RIP. with the right Musical Producer to challenge&also keep the Gut-Bucket feeling she brings She would still be Unstoppable.still this Disc is Pretty Good.

Mavis, you make me want to believe!Sunday, October 24, 2004
64 year old Mavis Staples has spent most of her career as the lead singer of The Staples Singers. It's been like eleven years since her last solo effort. Alligator Records obviously knew it was time to get her back in the game. Something strange is going on here. This is the second gospel review I've done. Perhaps some sort of subtle change is coming over me? Naah, I just know good music when I hear it. I'm still a heathen! Anyway, Mavis is relentlessly optimistic on this album and content in the knowledge that the big Sky Pilot is watching over her. At first you think "Mavis honey, open your eyes and look around you. Things aren't all that pretty". By that time, it's too late. You've already noticed that the album is a smokin blues and gospel groove and you've cranked the volume up a little bit. The next thing you know, you're singing along with her. Then you find yourself admitting that you're hooked. You find yourself playing "Pop's Recipe" over and over again. It's not even that much fun to be grouchy anymore. What has the woman done to you? The next thing you know, you'll be wanting to help your fellow man. I need to listen to some heavy metal so life will get back to normal.

Mavis, Mavis, Mavis!Saturday, October 02, 2004
This lastest offering from Mavis Staples almost
brings me to tears because it's so uplifting and
healing. There is not a song I do not like lyrical
or musically here. And her backing band is just
fabulous. This album has a rootsy r&b and folk feeling
to it that's hard to come by anywhere else. And lastly,
I love the messages in songs like "God Is Not Sleeping"
and "He Ain't No Better Than You." You don't need to
be religious to enjoy Mavis' offerings here. You just
need to have an open mind and open heart
