Good diet; needs work for obese audience...Monday, April 11, 2005
My husband and I started the low-fat, controlled-portions Volumetrics diet about ten days ago, having purchased the book after seeing it featured on a NY news show. The news feature on Volumetrics advertised that one could eat as much as you wanted of the high volume foods; however, portion control is important. It's easy to follow but we both still experience night time cravings for high-fat, dense foods, even after following the meal and snack plan religiously.
We are not sure if my husband who is obese is following the diet correctly; the book is lacking calorie totals or daily meal plan guidelines for obese or morbidly obese dieters.
Breakfast and lunch are easy to follow but we are sometimes confused about what is allowed for dinner especially if one tries to map the dinner recipes to the dinner plan guidelines. I would find it hard to develop my own dinner recipes.
The meals are filling and we feel like we are eating more food than normal except for dinner. It's a healthy diet and we plan to continue. I am hoping to somehow reach the author to get more information about obese participants. No weight loss after 10 days for me but I had one big cheat day and a couple of evening cheats. My husband has lost 2 lbs. in 10 days.

A Nutrition MUST READ!Friday, March 04, 2005
I am a fitness and nutrition fanatic (just ask Amazon who I could singlehandedly support)! I own 100s of nutrition and diet books, and this ranks near the top. Why? Well, first, this is the ONLY diet plan that I have followed that has not left me feeling deprived and hungry most of the day. Second, I have been able to lose the weight I wanted following this plan. Third, this plan is healthy, well-researched and does not promote the exclusion of any food type, which makes maintaining weight after weight loss extremely difficult to impossible. And finally, the author presents her research and information in a clear-cut and easily understandable manner.
As a result, this is a plan that I will be able to follow for life, which means I may be in the minority of people who is able to maintain my weight long-term. I can't recommend this book enough. If I was stranded on a desert island and could only bring one of my many nutrition books with me, this would be it. I look forward to reading Dr. Rolls' update to this book, entitled the Volumetrics Eating Plan, which was released this month.

Outstanding weight loss book!Friday, November 05, 2004
When this book came out there was very little hype about it. The title is not sexy, there are no exciting visuals, weight loss is not fast. Thus many people ignored it and hopped on the "diet of the week" bandwagon.
Yet "The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan" by Rolls and Barnett is one of the best, easiest to follow "diet" plans on the market. And it is backed up by research.
The plan is simple. On a daily average most people eat about the same weight of food. That weight could have a caloric value of 1500 calories or 2500 calories depending on what you select to eat. Rolls and Barnett teach you to eat lower calorie but high satiety foods by increasing the water rich foods in your diet. Foods like fruits and vegetables. These will fill you up and thus you will eat less.
For example you could eat Italian Pasta Salad with a lot of veggies and for 200 calories eat TWICE as much as Italina Pasta Salad thats heavy on the rotini. You could eat one 60 calorie cookie in a snap or eat one juicy water filled apple for the same amount of calories over a longer period of time. You get more food for the same calories. Because you are eating more food you will over the course of the day eat less and thus your calories will be lower and you will over time lose weight.
Rolls and Barnett give plenty of recipes, substitutions, and suggestions to help you easily accomplish your goals. Try it today. Have a cup of soup or an apple prior to eating lunch. Thise foods are filling and you will eat less of the energy dense foods like chips and candy.
An easy to understand, excellent plan for good health and weight loss!

missing star sodium alertMonday, January 05, 2004
This otherwise useful/valuable book (see other reviews) is marred by lack of care in the matter of sodium. When the caloric content of food is reduced(desireable for weight loss) the sodium from added salt should also be reduced. For example, an extra helping of Vegetable Curry Soup, or Chili Ranchero would be fine calorically, but in one item of one meal, would exceed the recommended daily maximum sodium intake, ~2000mg. This is an unnecessary risk, since by using simple techniques the salt content of most conventional recipes can be cut at least in half with miniscule loss in flavor. To understand the many reasons for salt restriction, "The Salt Solution" by Boynton, McCarty, and Moore, and "Salt, Diet, and Health" by MacGregor and de Wardener, are highly recommended.

This Is The Book To ReadSaturday, December 13, 2003
This is the book that everyone who is looking to lose weight and keep it off permanently should read and apply, rather than books by authors who are only looking to enrish their pockets by selling such products like Dr. Phil's Shape Up! supplements and nutrition bars that are absolutely unnecessary for weight loss or weight control!! This book is written by an author who has an authority and knowledge in the nutrition field and knows what she is talking about. Very highly recommended.
