Description
One-man show Dwele’s debut, Subject, comes correct with neo-soul staples in place. That is to say, there are enough acoustic guitars, stacked harmony vocals, mid-tempo grooves, and sound effects of scratchy vinyl to power an old-school symposium. What the Detroit-bred associate of backpack-rappers Slum Village lacks in depth, he makes up for in sheer summer-ready listenability. Dwele’s genre could be called neo-neo-soul; he seems to owe as much to the foundations laid down by D’Angelo as to obvious idol Stevie Wonder. While lacking the idiosyncrasies of those artists, Dwele manages to slide out of the speakers with enough skills to convince a casual listener to let the languid mood take over. Subject’s title track is its most fully imagined; the needle-on-record gambit that obscures its likable chorus could actually be heard as a conceptual gambit rather than a mere irritation. Elsewhere, Dwele piles on the quiet-storm stuff so masterfully that he sows confusion, while at least seemingly hoping to settle down with one conquest. Vision is hardly up to talent here, but for now, Dwele gets a pass on winning sonics alone. --Rickey Wright

5 of 5 stars  Outstanding Dwele
Tuesday, April 05, 2005
I'm tired of the same ole, same ole. Dwele was like a refreshing beverage in the dry dessert. How could anybody find Subject boring? Open your ears, listen ... it is too refreshing.

4 of 5 stars  I am still playing this...

I listen to this at least once a week and I bought this back in 2003. There are a few songs that could have been left behind, but this CD has a great playback value for me, personally. Some of the songs I enjoy are:

Truth
Twuneanunda
A.N.G.E.L. (interlude)
Day at a time
Hold On
Kick out of you
Whoomp (interlude) (the background is nice)
Mahogany
Let you hair down

Overall this is a good CD

4 of 5 stars  IN A TRANCE
Wednesday, February 23, 2005
I'm looking forward to buying this CD for my personal collection. I first listened to this at my boyfriends house. I had never heard of this artist before then. Many months later, the melody and words to one song keeps playing in my head (A.N.G.E.L). It couldn't be more soothing. That's enough for me to buy it!!

4 of 5 stars  Very Relaxing Material
Thursday, February 03, 2005
I first heard Dwele on Tainted and then I heard Find A Way..I didnt think about getting his album at all because I didnt really know what to expect from him..I guess I assumed that his album would be lumped under neo-soul, but that doesnt mean that all "neo-soul" tagged albums are all that good..But just a couple of days ago, I was listening to an online radio station and heard some of his songs..Damn, they were smooth!! The songs that I like the most are- Angel (interlude), Day at a time, Subject, Hold on and Kick out of you (my ultimate favorite from the album)..Though his voice leaves something to be desired, it is smooth enough to hold down this album along with the incredible vibe given from the beats..Its a nice album to put on when you just want to relax...It would be nice to hear what else this man has to offer!!

4 of 5 stars  His voice is...........

soothing. I first heard this CD after a long day out. I laid in bed and listened to the whole CD. Dwele's voice is relaxing. "Hold On" is the best of them all. It's good to see artists like this who don't fall into the commercialized image of today's R&B.
