Confessions
Description
A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confession, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly PG-13 rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this co-produced offering, which he claims is "the real him." It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious twenty one songs, that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats, and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 of 5 stars  Some songs are catchy, some not

I liked the song Yeah by Usher when I heard it on the radio during PE [don't ask.] I liked it because it was catchy, and wasn't your average rap. It was pretty easy to understand. But I only give this album three stars because some of the songs are catchy, like My Boo, Yeah!, Burn, and Bad Girl, the rest are kinda ordinary.

3 of 5 stars  Usher's best work...at times. 8701 is still Usher's best.

Confessions contains some of Usher's best work but not in enough amounts. "Yeah," "Caught Up," "Bad Girl," and "Burn" are some well produced cuts. The highlight of the album is "Take Your Hand" which has an old swing quality to it and the best melody and vocal performance of any of the records on here. However, the album suffers overall because there is little variation on vocal styles or melodies from song to song. Each of the songs have a hip hop flavor and stress beat over melody. The fact that the songs lack any driving melody adds to the monotony. Add to that the fact that Usher doesn't change his vocal style for any of the songs very much means that the album drags on until it hits one of good tracks and with 17 tracks in the orginal non-special edition, that becomes a bit of a problem.

The Special Edition is a big improvement over the original because 2 out of the 4 new tracks really stand out. "Red Light" is Usher's version of Michael Jackson's "Speed Demon" off of the "Bad" album. It is done extremely well and actually manages to better Michael's cut. It has a great melody, vocal performance, and builds a lot of tension and drama. "My Boo" is also a great addition as it features great vocal performances from both Usher and Alicia Keys. The Special Edition adds much variety that the original was lacking.

8701 remains Usher's best album, Confessions pales in comparison when you compare the quality of the "album tracks." 8701 had the latin flavor in "How Do I Say," a good balad in "Can U Help Me," (Confessions lacks a standout ballad which it really needs), "U-Turn" which was an amazing cut, more variety, and a overall more varied and better vocal performance by Usher.

1 of 5 stars  One Of The Worst Albums You Could Imagine
Monday, May 02, 2005
I hate music comming out now because all it talks about is sex, money, and a girl's body. This album is a perfect example. I believe that the world should go back to rock. I personally thought this album was horrific. This is just a pathetic and revolting CD. Take my advice and never by this ever.

1 of 5 stars  Terrible

This is his worst masterpiece at this time. There was nothing new from this album ; the same from his last album. Freeze-dried, unchoky R&B songs that ain't worth listenin to. This is a lot of waste in money.
