Product Description
At Folsom Prison
Description
Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. --Colin Escott

5 of 5 stars  incredible!

the level of intensity in this cd is just monumental. Cash's deep baritone is the best element of the music, making it connect with the listener in a deep way. My favorite song is "greystone chapel," deep and hopeful and probably the best representation of what this cd is all about. This is Cash's defining moment arguably, and is an essential in any collection, especially for fans of country music. Even if you have an aversion to country music you should check this out; it is so much better and really raw and rocking compared to modern day country (which is a joke)!

5 of 5 stars  you really only need to hear one song....

to jump on the bandwagon...a couple of my favorites are 25 minutes to go, cocaine blues, long black veil, and fulsom prison blues. the whole album gives you the chills though.

5 of 5 stars  All Time Favorite Album
Thursday, May 05, 2005
I first heard this ALBUM in April of '69. My drill instructor would put us to sleep with it in Army basic training at Ft. Campbell, KY. Having listened to JC with my dad all my life, I had to buy it. We wore it out rather quickly and kept buying fresh copies as needed. I've never tired of the enthusiasm shown by the inmates and how this carried over to JC and his crew. Now, my point, which has something to do with this recording. Are we ever going to see a good DVD or other video of JC? The latest is the Montreaux DVD which has JC trying to find a pulse in a crowd of people sitting on their hands. The previous prison DVD is just a show with no connection between JC and the inmates. We need Folsum Prison, San Quentin, MSQ, and/or his MSG show for VH-1 from '94. This is the JC that we hear on his live and studio recordings. Enough with the sanitization.

5 of 5 stars  Greystone chapel an amazing gospel song by Johnny Cash.

When i heard this album on an 8 track cassette in 1975 i was stunned by the good singing by Johnny Cash.
Now that i got it on an cd complete it is even better.I love the song "Greystone chapel" written by Glen Shirley. What an amazing good performance Johnny is doing on this,an perfect gospel song. When i sometimes in the future is driving the highways in USA i will play this cd.Buy it you won`t regret it.

5 of 5 stars  The less a man is to make declaritive statements...

...The less he is to look foolish in retrospect, but I'll go out on a limb for this one. THIS IS THE GREATEST LIVE RECORDING IN AMERICAN HISTORY from a man the embodied what being a true american is all about. Never saw the man wave a flag once...and still a hero for all.
