5 of 5 stars  What the hell?
Tuesday, April 05, 2005
This is the weirdest movie I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of weird ones. Man Bites Dog, Eraserhead, and Cube for example. But this is just...I don't know.

The 'plot,' if there is one, is set in Xenia, Ohio. People are just living their lives after a devastating tornado. I actually asked one of my friends at a record store about this movie, and he said it hit home to him because he used to live in Xenia. So, it is a bit realistic. I don't know if he's ever met some of the charecters though. Tummler and Solomon (named after the Sleep song, Evil Gypsy/Solomon's Theme) are complete weirdos. Solomon takes baths in filthy water, and Tummler has sex with retarded prositutes. I wasn't saying this was going to make sense, people.

There's no real meaning in Gummo, and that's what I like about it. There's no underlying moral and no big message. Harmony Korine just felt like making it, and for that, I congratulate him. If you like weird movies like Man Bites Dog, then this is for you. Now, I gotta go work out to Madonna.

5 of 5 stars  One of my all time favorites!

This film is a true work of art. It's not trash in any form. If you want trash, watch John waters movies. I cant even describe how much i love this film. If i could give it more stars, i would. If you like weird avant-garde cinema, you'll love this. I just cant get enough of this film. I honestly think im going to watch it tonight. If you like Larry Clarks work, then you'll probably like this. Larry and Harmony are my favorite directors of the 90s. If you have not seen this movie yet. Hurry up and buy it or something. My MOM even liked it! so make sure to pick one up for your mom as well. peep it!

5 of 5 stars  Why Some People Hate "Gummo"?
Friday, March 25, 2005
Intrigued by some very negative almost hateful "Gummo" comments, I overcame my initial lack of interest in seeing this weirdly titled and as such perceived film. And good thing I did, because it shines a tiny ray of hope for film enthusiasts like me, feed up with mindless, unadulterated film manure abundantly and persistently served to the mainstream audience.
Having sad that, its no wonder some of the "Gummo" comments are so extreme. It's a symptom of a cultural idiotism from "brain-washing" by too many "Miss Congenialities", "Giglis" and such, as well as the untamed outbreak of reality shows.
"Gummo" fortunately is out of this league. It is one of the most inspired and original American movies I have seen in the last decade. It is gruesome and funny at the same time, as much repulsive as beautiful, where poetic absurdity blends with painful realism. It's so rare for one film can carry such divergent emotions.
By no means "Gummo" is a masterpiece in a traditional sense. You won't find it among the greatest films of all-time. But I would not hesitate to put Corine's directorial debiut next to "Citizen Kane" for its conceptual, visual and narrative brilliance, personified by some of the most haunting moments (such a the infamous bathtub scene) in history of moving image.

I loved it. It's origonal, very artistic, and put together nicely. I've noticed a lot of people wrote bad reviews about the movie... I guess they didnt understand it and the characters. Or probably have horrible taste in movies. Anyways watch it, regardless of the comments, you just might like it.

1 of 5 stars  What pure trash.
Sunday, February 27, 2005
Having lived in Xenia Ohio for several years now, I can tell you this peice of crap is completely false. Beleive it or not, there are people out there who think this is 'based on a true story' and that Xenia Ohio is really like this. The only thing 'true', is that we have had 2 tornados in the past 25 years, one of which in 1974 destroyed most of the town. Not in the '1990s' like the film potrays. This is not some racist white trash breeding ground, in fact a good portion of our population is of African orgin. I wouldnt care about this waste except that we know have vistors dumb enough to look around for the false landmarks in the movie.

Aside from my obvious bias, the movie is a bore. There is no plot, and the film relies on shock value like the usual reality-show world BS that is popular now.
